The play concerns Maude, the landlord's wife. This is her second marriage, and Henry, her present husband, is not proving to be so exciting and romantic as her first, Roger, who was somewhat unpredictable but more satisfying husband, long believed to have been drowned at sea. Roger's death, however, proves to be rumour, and he returns. Maude is faced with the choice of two husbands and the audience is presented with an opportunity to answer the vital question on her behalf.
